Two legends in the world of web server rental and hosting, The Planet (the one we use for referring customers from ServerBuddies) and SoftLayer, have merged, putting an end to the rumors and speculations that were around for months.
The confirmation message was revealed by The Planet, via a private email message that says official announcement of the merger shall be commenced soon. Even after confirming the news, the tech world is suspecting why the public announcement is being delayed.
As per the report, The Planet shall now be known as SoftLayer. The reports showing the stake of the management and investment firm of SoftLayer in The Planet had sparked talks that the company is going to be acquired soon, tech fans (who know the importance of a good dedicated server) shared the news of the hosting merger.
Earlier, The Planet was claimed to be the largest privately owned dedicated server company, having 48,000 servers, 20,000 customers and 15.7 Million websites across the globe. Many leaders in the management team of SoftLayer, including the CEO Lance Crosby, were previously employed by The Planet.
The merger is expected to give birth to the largest dedicated server provider having around 80,000 servers under management. It was also reported that the combined company will probably be led by Crosby.
